Center for Worker Safety and Industrial Hygiene

Altarum Institute has been working to save lives and improve health for more than 70 years. We share the Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) and employer’s mission to assure safe and healthful working conditions for employees. Despite efforts to protect workers in both the private and public sector, approximately 13 workers are killed daily, resulting in 4,821 workers killed on the job in 2014.[1] In addition, nearly 3 million non-fatal workplace injuries and illnesses occur annually, causing extreme financial and resource burdens in the form of health impacts and reduced productivity. The economic costs of these occupational injuries and illnesses are enormous. The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates the cost of fatal and non-fatal work-related injuries at $198 billion.2

Safety CultureTo support workplace safety and to comply with federal worker safety regulations, private and public organizations independently develop and implement worker safety programs. Many of these programs have helped to safeguard employees from hazards that cause injury, illness or fatalities. However, more safety and health research solutions are critically needed to help employers reach the ‘Goal of Zero’ injuries, illnesses and fatalities. Altarum understands that workers’ actions are the results of habits and organizational culture. Thus, behaviors lead to conditions that can either support or negatively impact workplace safety.

Altarum’s Center for Worker Safety and Industrial Hygiene is committed to understanding the complexity of workplace safety, including behavioral challenges, communication plans, hazard identification, engineering controls, risk management, training delivery, and policy needs. We employ seasoned safety and health experts with technical and programmatic skills and knowledge across OSHA 29 CFR worker safety regulations and commercial enterprise safety best practices. Our experts hold nationally recognized safety and health credentials, including: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Ergonomics Assessment Specialist (CEAS), and Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).

Our staff are working to identify and implement risk management practices that will help reduce the total number, severity, and costs from workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. Altarum’s Center for Worker Safety is helping to solve these issues by working diligently with our nationally recognized safety and health partners to identify and abate workplace hazards.
