Dr. Brad Smith, Altarum Institute fellow and former co-director of Altarum’s Center for Consumer Choice in Health Care, helped guide the Center’s strategic research initiatives related to consumer engagement in health care. He also led technical projects in a variety of substantive areas. Before assuming his current position, he served as a senior analyst in Altarum’s Health Quality Research practice area.
A member of Altarum’s team from 2003 to 2013, Dr. Smith possesses extensive experience in conducting methodologically sophisticated, multimethod program evaluations ranging from large-claims database analyses to interviews with key informants. He served as a co-investigator on Altarum’s community-based disease management trials conducted with the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, and co-led the survey and administrative data analysis components of the joint Altarum-RAND GPRA mental health services evaluation in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Dr. Smith has served as principal investigator on two studies for the State of Texas Health and Human Services Commission as well as on rural health evaluations performed for the VA and the Health Resources and Services Administration. He has published work on mobile health technologies, cost-effectiveness, quality of life, and clinical outcomes in chronic disease.
Before joining Altarum, Dr. Smith was employed by the U.S. Government Accountability Office and McDaniel College. His MA and PhD in sociology are from Indiana University, and he holds a bachelor’s in political economy from Michigan State University.
