Courtney, Ph.D., American Society for Nutrition’s (ASN) Executive Officer, interacts with the elected Officers of the Society in order to manage the business affairs of the Society and the two scientific journals, maintain a relationship with the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), coordinate public affairs activities, and provide support for the selection and scheduling of the scientific program at the annual meeting (Experimental Biology).

Dr. Courtney brings to ASN over 20 years management experience in medical and scientific societies. Prior to joining ASN, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Clinical Research Forum (CRF). The Forum is the leading advocate for clinical research in the United States. Dr. Courtney worked steadfastly with the Board of CRF to expand the awareness of the importance of clinical research and to evolve the CRF activities to build partnerships and actively advocate in support of the broader interests and needs of clinical research.

In addition to his understanding of the role that research plays in the well-being of our world’s population, Dr. Courtney has a demonstrated track record in financial and operations management, including membership development, fundraising, business process reengineering and turnaround management. Dr. Courtney served as the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer for the American Diabetes Association (Alexandria, VA) as well as for the U.S. Clinical Research and Development Foundation (Rosslyn, VA).

In addition, he served as Director of Finance and Administrative Services for the American University (Washington, DC). In these positions, Dr. Courtney assisted the organizations in substantially increasing revenues and improving the financial health of the organizations through development, fundraising, creation of new programs, and cost reduction initiatives.

Dr. Courtney holds an adjunct faculty appointment as associate professor at the University of Maryland, University College (College Park) where he teaches courses in Operations Management, Marketing, Organizational Development and Business Management including the design of a totally web-based business course.

Dr. Courtney earned his doctorate in educational administration from American University; his master’s in business administration from Hood College; and, his bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from the University of Maryland.
