In her role as deputy director, Judy Varela, RHIA, is responsible for the technical assistance programs within the Center for Implementation Science. A subject matter expert on the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record Incentive Programs, she oversees the development and delivery of the consultative services offered by the Michigan Center for Effective IT Adoption (M-CEITA), a program for advising Michigan providers on the adoption of health information technology (IT) and navigating the program requirements for becoming a meaningful user of certified technology.
As the project lead for M-CEITA’s Medicaid services, she works closely with the Michigan Department of Community Health to coordinate subsidized assistance for more than 1,500 Medicaid-eligible professionals in the state of Michigan.
Ms. Varela has more than 20 years of experience in the health care industry and is responsible for the daily operations of health information management departments; selection and implementation of software systems; creating and conducting system-wide software user training sessions; and administration of formal education programs on topics such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the Health IT for Economic and Clinical Health Act, and the inpatient prospective payment system.
Ms. Varela holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Health Record Administration from the University of Pittsburgh, and she is certified as a Registered Health Information Administrator by the American Health Information Management Association.
