Vice President of Strategic Initiatives
Raena Akin-Deko is vice president of strategic initiatives at Altarum, where she develops and operationalizes across Altarum’s seven operating centers a strategic framework for creating innovative programs and initiatives that advance quality of care for chronically ill and disadvantaged populations.
Prior to joining Altarum, Raena spent 13 years at the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), leading strategy, growth, and performance of NCQA’s $50 million portfolio of evaluation products and development of accreditation and recognition products valued at $30 million.
Raena has her thumb on the pulse of the healthcare sector, having chaired multi-stakeholder committees composed of state, federal, and private sector health systems and purchasers—from Kaiser Permanente to American Express—to gather input on existing and new products to improve quality. She is skilled at bringing together and leading diverse groups of health care and public health experts to create impactful solutions that drive system transformation and achieve better and more equitable outcomes, particularly for at-risk and disenfranchised populations.
Earlier in her career, Raena served as the director of learning and innovation at the Alliance of Community Health Plans, where she increased membership and implemented programs to highlight best practices in quality improvement, medical management, and product development.
An active community volunteer, Raena is an executive member of the Washington Women’s Leadership Initiative and a board member of Medical Care for Children Partnership Foundation, which provides low-income children in Fairfax County, Virginia, with access to primary care and oral health care.
Raena holds a master’s degree in Health Services Administration (MHSA) and a Bachelor of Science degree, both from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
