As a Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst in the Health Care Analytics Group, Matthew Michaelson helps support the U.S. Department of Defense, the Military Health System (MHS), the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED), the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs among other clients.
Mr. Michaelson is responsible for coordinating GIS services, analysis, design, and development for various projects within Altarum. By leveraging the latest GIS technology, he can conduct in-depth spatial analysis to support senior managers in GIS concept formulation, data visualization, and exploration in support of business development and research initiatives.
Mr. Michaelson is currently working to support efforts to develop a SAS Enterprise Business Intelligence Server- and ESRI ArcGIS Server-integrated analysis system and Web portal while providing standardization, map automation, and geodatabase development for the National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics. For PHA, he serves as a third-party evaluator of private-sector commitments to make advancements in childhood obesity prevention while providing GIS analysis and mapping products to support the verification needs of the organization.
He is also providing advanced geospatial tools and mapping products, drive time, and proximity analysis to help support location analytics within BUMED. For the Defense Health Agency, Mr. Michaelson provides geospatial support, tools, and applications to support the MHS. He produces components for the annual TRICARE Report to Congress while pursuing advanced geospatial analysis techniques to better understand MHS population, health utilization, cost, and access to care. Mr. Michaelson also worked in conjunction with other Altarum staff on an internal research and design project involving drive time analysis.
Previously, Mr. Michaelson worked as a consultant and directly for county governments in the state of Florida for almost 10 years in various capacities, including GIS Analyst, Programmer, and GIS Supervisor. His expertise is in designing and implementing geodatabases and procedures to efficiently and effectively maintain geospatial information. He was actively involved with emergency management, planning, zoning, and overall process improvement within business processes.
Mr. Michaelson has more than 14 years of GIS experience and holds a bachelor’s of science degree in environmental science, with an emphasis on assessment and planning, from Bowling Green State University. He is also a Certified GIS Professional as established by the GIS Certification Institute.
