How Accessible is Behavioral Health Care in Michigan?
Across the state of Michigan and the nation, access to behavioral health care is a critical issue. Lack of access often results in unmet needs, delays in receiving care, and financial burdens. In order to gain a better understanding of gaps and barriers to treatment, Altarum conducted an in-depth analysis of access to behavioral health services in Michigan by payer type.
In our study, we document methods and results of analyses to characterize current access to mental health and substance use disorder treatment in the state, describe barriers to care, and identify potential strategies for increasing access.
In addition to an in-depth report, we also provide high-level study results in four companion research briefs that summarize findings separately for the Medicare, Medicaid, privately-insured, and total Michigan populations.
This research was funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.
