Purpose of poll

The purpose of this poll is to understand what people in Michigan are thinking and doing about Coronavirus/COVID-19. This poll asks about risk factors, preventive behaviors, concerns, and sources of information about Coronavirus/COVID-19. This allows us to understand how feelings and behaviors change over time, as well as how certain thoughts and behaviors might be related. All of this helps Michigan better respond to Coronavirus/COVID-19.

How this poll is conducted

Because people may take the poll more often than our request of once per week, and because people who respond to internet polls may differ in important ways from people who don’t, the results may not be a perfect representation of the attitudes and actions of all Michigan residents. Even with this in mind, the poll results still provide very important insights into the Cornoavirus/COVID-19 situation in our state and individual counties

As we continue to monitor the pandemic, Altarum is conducting other types of surveys with more rigorous approaches to validate the findings in this poll. As that data becomes available we will also make them public on this site.

Results

Map of Michigan. This map shows the number of responses by county. By selecting individual counties you can see county specific information including: general levels of concern, % of people willing to shelter in place, % of households with risk factors (defined below), and the % of households with someone who is experiencing possible Coronavirus/COVID-19 symptoms. Given the overlap between Coronavirus/COVID-19 symptoms and symptoms experienced among people with cold, flu, or seasonal allergies, most people reporting symptoms likely do NOT have the virus. However, relative differences between counties are suggestive of differences in virus prevalence.

Across the state, there are still many counties where less than a few hundred residents have responded to this poll. If you live in one of those counties, you can help us develop more meaningful data for your community by taking the poll and encouraging your friends and neighbors to take it as well.

To display % of households reporting symptoms by county within the map, click the “>>” at the top of the map to open the legend. Click/check the box next to the “% of households with symptoms” map layer and uncheck the box next to the “responses” map layer. To show the range of what each color represents, click the “>” next to the map layer. Note, symptom rate data is only displayed for counties with at least 100 respondents.

Charts Next to Map. The line charts show daily levels of general concern, anxiety, and the % reporting Coronavirus/COVID-19 symptoms within their household. The pie chart shows how likely respondents are to “shelter in place” if such an order were given. The bar chart shows how many people engaged in behaviors that could promote the spread of Coronavirus/COVID-19. Women, and people in certain age groups are sometimes more likely to participate in polls. To make sure that the data best represents people of all genders and ages, the results presented here have been adjusted using a process called “weighting”.

Shaded Table. Each cell in this table shows the number of people with that specific concern and also what % of the total those people represent. The darker the shading, the higher the percentage of people who choose that response. These results are “raw” numbers meaning they are not weighted by age and gender.

Charts Below Shaded Table. These charts show the % of people who engaged in behaviors known to either spread or contain the Coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak. For these charts you can select filters, such as county, gender, and presence of household risk factors to see responses for a specific subset of people in our state. These are raw survey results and are not weighted by age or gender. For the “% engaging in appropriate public health protections” chart, the values shown are for the percentage of respondents who answered that they are doing the activity “a lot more than usual” or “far more than usual”.
